The Upper Dublin High School Theater Department is pleased to be performing The Giver; a play adapted by Eric Coble from the Newbery Award-winning book by Lois Lowry. The Giver is a story of what appears to be a utopian society, devoid of emotion and color, but is slowly revealed to be dystopic and sinister. Jonas is the young boy in the society who is selected to be the Receiver. He receives the memories of the past from a wise old man who tells Jonas to call him the Giver. The Giver transmits memories, good and bad, to Jonas who will be the only member in the society with any memories at all. The first memory he receives is of an exhilarating sled ride and Jonas feels joy for the first time. The memories which follow create a sense of turmoil for Jonas and he begins to question his society's values. This iconic story is read by school students nation-wide each year. The show is performed in a unique space with lighting and sound that match the tone of the story.
